8 Skincare Tips For Women Over 40

As we gracefully journey through life, our skin undergoes its own remarkable journey, reflecting the passage of time and the experiences we accumulate along the way. For women over 40, this journey brings with it unique skincare challenges and considerations. While age may bestow wisdom and confidence, it also introduces changes in our skin's texture, tone, and elasticity.

In this blog post, we delve into eight essential skincare tips tailored specifically for women over 40. From safeguarding against the sun's aging effects to nourishing your skin from within, these tips offer guidance on how to nurture and protect your skin for a radiant and youthful complexion.

1. We all love the sun, it’s good for our soul but not so good for our skin. Sun protection forms the foundation of every skin-care plan because the sun’s rays make our skin age more quickly.

  • Seek shade. Be sure to seek shade between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Cover up in style. Whenever possible, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to help reduce fine lines around your eyes.
  • Apply sunscreen every day before going outdoors. To protect your skin, apply sunscreen to all skin that clothing will not cover. You want to use a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection. I recommend Gernetic Melano SPF 30 or 50.

2. Forget about indoor tanning. The sun, tanning beds, and sunlamps expose you to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays accelerate skin aging.

3. Apply moisturizer everyday. As we age, skin becomes drier. Fine lines and wrinkles appear. Moisturizing traps water in our skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. For best results, I recommend Gernetic’s Synchro 2000 or Marine Day Base for day and Synchro for night as a facial moisturizer.

4. Wash away impurities and makeup twice a day. How you wash your face can affect your appearance. For best results, wash gently with warm water using a mild hydrating cleanser such as Glyco or a cleanser with a gentle exfoliant such as the Marine Gumming Cleanser, rather than soap. Also avoid scrubbing your skin and always pat it dry.

5. Tobacco smoke contains toxins that can lead to a dull and dry complexion, loss of skin’s firmness, premature lines, wrinkles and leathery skin.

6. Eat healthy foods. A healthy diet promotes healthy skin. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Drink lots of water!

7. Get enough sleep. It’s called beauty rest for a reason. Sleep gives your body time to refresh and renew itself. You can always see a difference in your appearance after a good nights sleep.

8. An ideal morning and evening skincare regime using clean, naturally derived active ingredients that absorb well into the skin are your best products. Skin care products just like food, have different levels of nutrition. Choose wisely just as you would a healthy diet.

  • AM - cleanse, tone, eye cream, smoothing cream, day moisturizer
  • PM - cleanse, tone, eye cream, smoothing cream, night moisturizer, serum
  • I recommend exfoliating 2x/wk, a facial each month and special treatment creams for specific concerns.
